As we head into the NBA offseason let’s look at the 5 best players at each position in the league right now. Today we’ll start with the point guards, everything will be taken into consideration like injuries, team play, age and what the player is like off the court. Each day we’ll do a different position.
- Stephen Curry
Steph has to be the number one point guard in the league and some would say that’s recency bias but if you look at Steph as a overall player on and off the court how could you argue he hasn’t been the best PG in the league for the last 7 years, now Curry has a had a rough stretch with injuries but if you look at all the PG in the league he’s not far from the rest in games played.
- Luka Doncic
Luka is number 2 for the reason of how young he is and what he’s done with this Dallas Mavericks team in these playoffs thus far, Luka is putting up historically great numbers in the playoffs and is overall a pretty durable player, now his defense isn’t great but in the NBA these days whos a great 2 way point guard and can shoot the three.
- Ja Morant
Some would think Ja should be higher on the list but I worry about the injuries with Ja, many would say he’s on the Derrick Rose trajectory and would compare Ja’s game to Rose. Ja did make a big leap this year with team wins and how far the Grizzlies got in these playoffs but shooting and injuries are going to be his biggest question mark for his future in this league.
- Trae Young
Trae Young is a phenomenal player but like Steph Curry his defense is a huge liability, Young has actually been more durable than most people woulda thought for Young’s size and weight but with Trae’s shooting ability he isn’t in the paint as much as other PG’s, if you pair Young with a Klay Thompson esk player like Golden State did with Curry you could have something there in Atlanta but the lack of defense on Trae’s part is going to be a factor for the Hawks in the future.
- LaMelo Ball
Now many wouldn’t put Lamelo in the top 5 but with how young he is and the way he plays the position he has the potential to be a great player in the future, putting up great stats in the assists and rebounding departments Lamelo is a lengthy player and could be a really good defender in the future if he works on his defensive game.
