Superstar running back Christian Mccaffrey has officially been traded to the San Francisco 49ers for multiple draft picks. The Carolina Panthers will receive 2023 2nd round, 3rd round 4th round picks and a 2024 5th round pick in exchange for McCaffrey.
With the Niners being in a win now mode and the Panthers firing head coach Matt Rhule and being considered one of the worst teams in the NFL this Panthers organization has decided to start a full rebuild. Panthers also traded wide receiver Robbie Anderson to the Cardinals earlier this week. McCaffrey was next on the list, Panther’s number one receiver DJ Moore is also on the trade block with many other pieces, and with McCaffrey having such a big trade market the Panthers really got maximum value for the star running back.
The six year veteran running back has been a multi time pro bowler and has made an all pro team but the main concern with Mccaffrey has been his injury status the last three years, the last three years Mccaffrey has really struggled staying on the field with just 10 games played in the previous two seasons before showing his durability thus far playing every game this season. Although Mccaffrey doesn’t put up crazy statistics in the run game he’s more of a multi use back as he can catch, play special teams, and sometimes be considered a wide receiver. Mccaffrey’s best season was in 2019 where he had a combined 2300 yards from scrimmage.
The 49ers will now take on the remaining four years of Mccaffrey’s deal which he we paid an average of $11.5 million per season which for a top tier running back in this league is a good price to pay although considering the draft capital and money against the cap that is a lot to pay but if it accounts for a Super Bowl, the 49ers and their fan base will definitely accept that. The Panthers clear space and get lots of draft picks for this upcoming draft which could be the best draft in half a decade.
