Suns/Mercury owner Robert Sarver suspended from the NBA

The National Basketball Association released finding from an intensive investigation from the last nine months after a massive story dropped on November 4th 2021 regarding the use of racially insensitive language; unequal treatment of female employees; sex-related statements and conduct; and harsh treatment of employees that on occasion constituted bullying.”

Obviously this is unacceptable in any context but especially for a man of this much power. NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the board of governors for the NBA handed Sarver a hefty but still considered light set of requirements to meet, these requirements include the following.

  • Mr. Sarver is suspended from the Suns/Mercury organization for a period of one year, during which time he will not:
  • Be present at any NBA or WNBA team facility, including any office, arena, or practice facility.
  • Attend or participate in any NBA or WNBA event or activity, including games, practices, or business partner activity.
  • Represent the Suns or Mercury in any public or private capacity.
  • Have any involvement with the business or basketball operations of the Suns or Mercury.
  • Have any involvement in the business, governance, or activities of either the NBA or WNBA, including attending or participating in meetings of either league’s Board (and their associated Board committees).
  • Mr. Sarver must, during his suspension, complete a training program focused on respect and appropriate conduct in the workplace.
  • Mr. Sarver is fined $10 million, the maximum permitted by the NBA Constitution & By-Laws.  The NBA will donate these funds to organizations that are committed to addressing race and gender-based issues in and outside the workplace.
  • Additionally, the Suns/Mercury organization must fulfill a series of requirements for workplace improvements set forth and monitored by the NBA.  These requirements, among other things, include:
  •  Retaining an outside firm to evaluate and make recommendations with respect to workplace training programs, policies and procedures, and hiring and compensation practices — with a focus on fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace.
  • Conducting regular and anonymous workplace culture surveys and responding to survey results with specific action plans.
  • Immediately reporting to the league any instances or allegations of significant misconduct by any employee.
  •  For a period of three years, providing the league with regular reports related to steps taken by the organization to address these requirements.
  • Following league direction for remediation/improvement of workplace issues if/as they arise.

Now this may seem like a over the top set of rules going further for the Suns/Mercury owner but in the case of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling back in 2014 this is considered to be a light fine, Sterling was banned from the NBA in a whole for a set of racist patterns in which Donald was forced to sell the Clippers. Players like LeBron James and Chris Paul have come out with statements saying “Our League Definitely Got This Wrong” in which for most to all members and players in the NBA they would agree this punishment is too light for the Suns/Mercury owner.

Russell Wilson and Donovan Mitchell news breakdown

NFL

Starting off in the NFL, newly acquired Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has signed a massive extension with the club that puts Russell under contract with the Broncos through the 2028 season. Russell and the Denver Broncos have agreed on a five year $245 million dollar extension with $165 million guaranteed. Denver now makes Russell the second highest paid quarterback on a yearly average basis just behind Aaron Rodgers who is averaging just over $50 million a year, good news for Denver fans is this contract does not kick in until the 2024 season so by then Mr unlimited will likely be around the fifth-eight highest QB.

Wilson also said “I believe this is a marriage, and you want to be here for a long time, and my goal is to be able to finish my career here.” Denver has also stated numerous times how Russell has made such a dramatic effect on this organization since arriving in Denver these last few months. Russell also faces his former team the Seattle Seahawks in week 1.

NBA

Donovan Mitchell has officially been traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for multiple players and draft picks. It’s come to no surprise that Mitchell and the Jazz have split ways as the Jazz were going into a rebuild after yet another playoff failure in the first round of the western conference playoffs last year, losing to the short-handed Dallas Mavericks without superstar Luka Doncic.

The full trade details are as following

Cavaliers receive

Donovan Mitchell

Jazz receive

Collin Sexton

Lauri Markkanen

Ochai Agbaji

2025 first-round pick

2026 pick swap

2027 first-round pick

2028 pick swap

2029 first-round pick

Mitchell will now be the number one option on this very young Cavaliers team as they look to boost their chances of making the playoffs in the eastern conference in 2018. Utah will now begin their full on rebuild for the next half decade or so.

NBA and NFL news

NFL

Starting off the the NFL San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is staying with the team for the 2022-2023 season after restructuring his contract with the team. The 49ers announced that Garoppolo’s new deal is very team friendly with a cap hit going from $26.95 million to just $8.5 million which still makes him the highest paid backup in the league, Garoppolo’s deal also can be worth up to $16 million with incentives.

After the 49ers shocked the world trading up to the NO. 3 slot in the 2021 draft to draft a quarterback members around the NFL knew Garoppolo’s time as the 49ers quarterback was limited. With the 49ers naming second year QB Trey Lance the starter Jimmy G will be a backup once again in his career.

    NBA

New York Knicks star RJ Barrett signs a long term extension with the team. Barrett and the Knicks have agreed on a four year rookie max extension worth up to $130 million. Barrett is the first Knicks player in over twenty years to sign a long term extension with the team after being drafted in the first round just three years ago.

Barrett was a highly coveted player coming out of Duke in 2019 with great athleticism and character, Barrett has yet to show that he’s as good as the two picks ahead of him {Zion Williamson and Ja Morant} but still has plenty of runway to show that he’s a true superstar in this league.

Lakers acquire Patrick Beverly from Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers made a late night roster move on wednesday evening, sending Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson to the Jazz in exchange for newly acquired Jazz guard Patrick Beverly.

Beverly played last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves being packaged in the massive Rudy Gobert trade this offseason, Beverly averaged 9.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game for his short duration on the T-Wolves. Beverly has played in Los Angeles and isn’t scared of the spotlight he would have on himself in L.A, as Beverly played a multitude of seasons for the Lakers rivals the L.A Clippers.

This Lakers backcourt could be one of the most storied backcourts in all of the NBA as current point guard Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverly have had a messy past on and off the court. Beverly is known around the NBA as a “enforcer” and one of the better defensive guards in the NBA. With the Lakers including no picks in this trade, Lakers fans have to be somewhat excited for Beverly’s arrival in L.A but also confused as to why Westbrook is still on the team as this is not a good fit by any means on and off the court.

KD returning to the Nets

The Kevin Durant, Brooklyn Nets saga finally ends. Kevin Durant has been arguably the most drama filled superstar this offseason with requesting a trade over 2 months ago then making multiple attempts to utilize his leverage against Nets owner Joe Tsai. The Brooklyn Nets announced early yesterday afternoon that the organization and Durant have mended fences and will return for this next season and by the way the Nets are making this sound, it sounds like Durant will play out the rest of this contract and likely finish his career in Brooklyn.

A report came out on Tuesday that the Memphis Grizzlies did make a trade offer for Durant but it wasn’t considered to be a real offer, with multiple NBA insiders saying the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat were the frontrunners for a possible trade for Kevin. It was also reported by many insiders that Nets superstar Kyrie Irving was also made unavailable as the Nets wanted to keep Irving for the last year on his contract and now looking back at that report that was most likely a huge piece as to why Durant made his decision to return to the Nets for the future.

Roquan Smith requests trade

Bears superstar interior linebacker Roquan Smith has officially requested a trade from the Chicago Bears. Roquan officially announced his trade request over Twitter with a couple pictures screenshotted from his notes app on his iphone, with some quotes saying “unfortunately the new front office regime doesn’t value me here”, “every step of this journey has been take it or leave it”, “I haven’t had a chance to sit down with the McCaskey family, and they maybe can salvage this, but as of right now I don’t see a path back to the organization that I truly love” which doesn’t look good for the Bears new GM Ryan Poles and the fact that Bears fans already are upset at the fact that the roster has since been depleted in these last two years with key players being traded or released.

Roquan is the best player on the Bears and will be for at least the next two seasons, Smith is also the anchor of the Bears defense. Roquan has been nothing short of sensational since he arrived in Chicago in 2018 after being selected 8th overall in that draft. Roquan has been considered a top five to top eight middle linebacker in this league for a bit now and should get the money he’s ultimately looking for.

Roquan’s stats have been top of the league with having 95 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 interception, a returned touchdown, 163 combined tackles, a second team all pro and a pro bowl last season just alone.

The Bears should be doing everything to pay Roquan what he wants and with no hesitancy at all since they should have plenty of cap room with little to no star power on this roster and also a quarterback in Justin Fields on a rookie contract.

Kevin Durant gives Nets owner an ultimatum

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant and Nets owner met over the weekend to discuss where Durant lies on his trade request that he submitted earlier in this offseason {june 30th}, Durant in this meeting told Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai that you either pick me {KD} or the GM {Sean Marks} and Head Coach {Steve Nash}. Durant made it very clear to the Nets owner that he doesn’t have faith in the Nets direction as of now.

It was reported by Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 8 that Durant and Joe Tsai met in London on Saturday and that’s what Durant gave the owner to think about. The Brooklyn Nets have the rights to KD for the next four seasons. Durant signed a massive 4 year $198 million dollar contract in June of 2021 and looks like that deal has already fallen apart in Durant’s eyes.

It’s been rocky ever since the second year of this now third year going on to fourth year experiment with Durant and Kyrie Irving as the Nets big duo, while Durant has been a great player and person on and off the court for Brooklyn but with requesting this trade he’s {KD} now getting lumped into this diva/unreliable-esk player which is just not true.

As it’s been over a month since Kevin has requested to be traded and still nothing everyday it looks like more and more that KD is going to stay in Brooklyn and most people are assuming Joe Tsai is going to pick Kevin over the GM and head coach which is the smart thing to do as neither the GM or coach is at the top of their respected positions.

NBA top 5 players at each position

As we head into the NBA offseason let’s look at the 5 best players at each position in the league right now. Today we’ll start with the shooting guards, everything will be taken into consideration like injuries, team play, age and what the player is like off the court. Each day we’ll do a different position.

  1. Devin Booker

This may be a shock to have Booker as the number one shooting guard in the league but considering his age, playoff stats and how he acts off the court id put him number one. Booker is a young ascending player who’s a top scoring guard and he may not be the greatest defensive guard Booker’s offense makes up for his lack of defense.

  1. Bradley Beal

Bradley Beal is a phenomenal player in my opinion, from being considered one of the most loyal players in today’s game to an underrated two way guard, Beal is younger than most would think, Beal is only 28 and can easily be a top 5 SG for the next five years.

  1. Donovan Mitchell

Mitchell is similar to Devin Booker as they are both young ascending SG in this league, now Donvan is more of a two way player than Booker, Mitchell isn’t as gifted on the offensive end as Booker. Donovan is a great player off the court but on the court has had some issues with teammate Rudy Gobert in their on the court relationship but still is a great shooting guard for the next 5-7 years.

  1. Zach Lavine

Now some would say Zach Lavine should be ahead of Devin Booker or Donovan Mitchell but Lavine isn’t as gifted on the offensive end as Booker or gifted on the defensive end as Mitchell so it leaves Lavine in a weird spot, but nonetheless Lavine is still a great player with most teams wanting to have him as he’s set to hit free agency this offseason. Lavine has not been considered a “winning” player but also hasn’t been on the right team for that either.

  1. Anthony Edwards

This may be a shock to some as why Anthony Edwards is number 5 on this list skipping C.J Mccollum or Klay Thomspon but with Thompson’s injuries and C.J’s age Anthony Edwards was perfect to put at the number five spot. Edwards is becoming his own in Minnesota in his short two year NBA career but the fans and media love this guy on and off the court, with his jokes to starring in Netflix movie “Hustle” his off the court personality is one a NBA fan couldn’t not love.

NBA top 5 players at each position

As we head into the NBA offseason let’s look at the 5 best players at each position in the league right now. Today we’ll start with the point guards, everything will be taken into consideration like injuries, team play, age and what the player is like off the court. Each day we’ll do a different position.

  1. Stephen Curry

Steph has to be the number one point guard in the league and some would say that’s recency bias but if you look at Steph as a overall player on and off the court how could you argue he hasn’t been the best PG in the league for the last 7 years, now Curry has a had a rough stretch with injuries but if you look at all the PG in the league he’s not far from the rest in games played.

  1. Luka Doncic

Luka is number 2 for the reason of how young he is and what he’s done with this Dallas Mavericks team in these playoffs thus far, Luka is putting up historically great numbers in the playoffs and is overall a pretty durable player, now his defense isn’t great but in the NBA these days whos a great 2 way point guard and can shoot the three.

  1. Ja Morant

Some would think Ja should be higher on the list but I worry about the injuries with Ja, many would say he’s on the Derrick Rose trajectory and would compare Ja’s game to Rose. Ja did make a big leap this year with team wins and how far the Grizzlies got in these playoffs but shooting and injuries are going to be his biggest question mark for his future in this league.

  1. Trae Young

Trae Young is a phenomenal player but like Steph Curry his defense is a huge liability, Young has actually been more durable than most people woulda thought for Young’s size and weight but with Trae’s shooting ability he isn’t in the paint as much as other PG’s, if you pair Young with a Klay Thompson esk player like Golden State did with Curry you could have something there in Atlanta but the lack of defense on Trae’s part is going to be a factor for the Hawks in the future.

  1. LaMelo Ball

Now many wouldn’t put Lamelo in the top 5 but with how young he is and the way he plays the position he has the potential to be a great player in the future, putting up great stats in the assists and rebounding departments Lamelo is a lengthy player and could be a really good defender in the future if he works on his defensive game.

Tuesdays 7th and 8th seed play in games

Nets vs Cavaliers

With the Brooklyn Nets securing the 7th seed in the playoffs, it looks like the Boston Celtics will be getting their first round playoff matchup again. Last year Brooklyn blew the doors of the Celtics in route of a 4-1 series win but Boston will be getting another crack at Brooklyn this year. The Brooklyn Nets beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-108 thanks to Kyrie Irving’s 34 point double double and Kevin Durant 25 point double double, Cleveland will have another shot at making the playoffs by playing the winner of the Hawks and Hornets game on Friday. Despite the loss Cavs point guard Darius Garland had a phenomenal game with 34 points on 54% shooting.

Clippers vs Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-104 to secure the 7th seed and will be playing the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round thanks to a terrific game by Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell, combining for 59 points. Karl Anthony Towns may not have had a great game by only scoring 11 points but his team did get the win and will be playing in the playoffs for the first time in four years since Jimmy Butler left back in 2018. The Clippers will have another chance to make the 8th seed by beating the winner of the Pelicans, Spurs game, Paul George did have a good game by scoring 34 points on decent shooting percentages (41.7%FG, 50%3PT) but it wasn’t enough to lift the Clippers over the Timberwolves.
